This month, we chose Phuoc Nguyen as our Tutor of the Month because of his dedication to and passion for education. A Computer Engineer who graduated from George Mason University, Phuoc has been tutoring since 2001, back when Acakid Tutoring was known as “Akari Tutoring!”
We asked Phuoc some questions to get to know him better as a tutor:
1. What are your strengths as a tutor?
My strengths as a tutor lie in my experience and the ability to adapt to each student’s needs. I focus on building a strong foundation of understanding while enhancing a student’s logic and reasoning skills, which allows the student to become a self-reliant and capable problem solver.
2. How have you grown as a tutor over the years?
“To teach is to learn twice.” I have learned to be patient, understanding, and to communicate better. I have gained a different set of perspectives through working with students, which allows me to see the connections between gradual evolving concepts that I apply to daily life.
3. What do you work on with your students?
I primarily tutor in math and physics. I aim to instill confidence by engaging students and promoting critical thinking so that they develop an understanding and can apply mathematical concepts both in academia and in their personal lives.
4. What are your students’ goals and how do you accomplish them?
Although my students’ primary goals are to understand the class material and better perform on tests, I aim to develop their knowledge as I guide them through the content. By teaching a student how to be an effective problem solver, I can empower them and gradually allow them to become self-dependent.
5. When have you been extremely proud of a student?
I am proud of all my students. The best moment when I see that they have taken control of their learning, organization, and time. After that, they tend to grow at an incredible pace, having switched from ‘do’ to ‘understand and apply’.
6. What do you enjoy about working with Acakid?
Acakid caters to both students and tutors. Tutors can set their work schedule and have the flexibility to meet either in-person or online. In addition, Acakid provides tutors with materials, tools and allows them to teach in their own way without having to abide by a strict curriculum or guideline.
7. What are your hobbies and passions outside of Acakid?
I enjoy bowling, reading, and playing strategy games.
