Acakid’s June Tutor of the Month!

Each month, Acakid picks a standout individual to be the Tutor of the Month. We select this special tutor based on their experience, ratings, enthusiasm, creativity, and overall contributions to our team.

This month, we chose Kimiko Yerick as our Tutor of the Month. Kimiko has a BA in elementary education from University of Hawaii and also received her teacher’s license there. She has been tutoring with Acakid since 2014!

We asked Kimiko some questions to get to know her better as a tutor:

1. What are your strengths as a tutor?

I strive to do whatever it takes to help my students achieve their educational goals, and I go above and beyond to do so. I have taken my students to classroom events for extra credit, such as science fairs, or to the library for them to get the necessary tools to complete class assignments. I have also used additional educational tools such as IXL to help my students go above and beyond. I feel it is important to show your students that you will make that extra effort to help them succeed.

2. How have you grown as a tutor over the years?

I’ve definitely learned how to challenge my students in more creative ways. I have become a more well-rounded tutor who can cater to each child’s needs by working with a diverse group of students in a wide range of grade levels. It has definitely become evident to me that in order to be a successful tutor, you need to be able to have a variety of different methods to teach your students because all students are not the same.  These methods can be anything from using flash cards to help them improve in reading to using educational “games” to help them understand the topic to using props to help them understand math problems.

3. What do you work on with your students?

I simply strive for understanding with my students. Whatever subject or activity we are working on, I make sure they comprehend what they’re learning.  In terms of subjects, I have mainly worked on reading comprehension with students from grades K-SAT, as well as  math and science at elementary school level.  In order to help my students become more goal-oriented in their education, I make sure to check and see that they are using their student planners and are writing down their assignments every day.

4. When have you been extremely proud of your student?

The first student I tutored online was already very bright, so I was challenged to help her grow even more as a student. As a result, I was prompted to look up additional ways to help her grow.  Even when we were not in session, she would text me and ask me questions about her homework, which I thought was very proactive of her.  I was very proud of her “go-getter” attitude.

5. What do you enjoy about working with Acakid?

I have enjoyed the diversity of students that I have worked with through Acakid. I have had many different experiences, and I enjoyed every experience. It was also great to have the chance to tutor online; I had never done this before and I enjoy it as well.

6. What are your hobbies and passions outside of Acakid?

My two biggest hobbies outside of tutoring are martial arts and hula. Those hobbies have stuck with me since I was a kid, and I still enjoy having that part of my culture in my life.
