Announcing the March TOM!

Every month, Acakid looks at our tutors’ experience, ratings, enthusiasm, and overall contributions to our team to select one person to be the Tutor of the Month, AKA “TOM”!
This month, we chose Alex Chioma to be our Tutor of the Month. He is currently working on his bachelor’s degree in physics at the University of Central Florida, and has been tutoring with us for five years!
We interviewed Alex to get to know him better as a tutor:
1. What are your strengths as a tutor?
I like to think I excel at interpersonal skills and breaking down complicated topics into more easily understood terms.
2. How have you grown as a tutor over the years?
Over the years I have grown the most through my failures. I have had students misunderstand a topic and through my shortsightedness I did not realize they misunderstood until after their quiz. This feels awful as a tutor and forced me to focus on finding more concrete evidence on the student’s understanding before moving forward to another topic.
3. What do you work on with your student?
Typically my students and I will work on a variety of material. In general we will go through their classwork and homework to make sure they are on top of school. This includes material provided by the school as well as material given to me by Acakid or even through my own means. If I feel that a student is caught up on their current work in school we will work ahead to prepare them for the next topic.
4. What are your students’ goals and how do you accomplish them?
My students’ goals consist of acing their classes and their state exams. We prepare for this by meeting weekly and staying on top of each class as well as using old practice tests to prepare for state exams.
5. When have you been extremely proud of a student?
All of my students have at one time or another shown me very impressive skills. For example, one of my students memorized the quadratic formula in one class session. The next meeting I wanted to see how much of it he had remembered, not expecting him to know all of it. Sure enough, he knew the whole thing! This may seem minor to some, but it showed me that he was learning what I was teaching him and taking it from one session to the next.
6. What do you enjoy about working with Acakid?
The things I enjoy about working with Acakid are the community that has been built here and the professionalism shown by each member of it. Everyone who I have had contact with through Acakid has been bright, kind, and focused on delivering the best experience possible to both the clients and the tutors. I would never consider working with a different tutoring company.
7. What are your hobbies and passions outside of Acakid?
Outside of Acakid, I am an avid video-gamer and guitar player. I also like to play board games and various casual sports with friends!
